Vacation down under – Sydney, Australia

A very good friend of mine is proud of the fact that he has been to every single United States national park.  I have not been to all of them.  I would say I have been to most, at least all those in the western United States.  When I was a kid, my parents used to drag us along on family vacations.  (Think about the National Lampoon movie, and you know what I mean)  As I have gotten older, the travel bug has bitten me.  I have been fortunate and in some cases lucky enough to travel to 5 of the 7 continents and 44 of the 195 countries in the world (as of 2024).  One of those was Australia.  Now I have to admit, I never traveled too far outside the city limits of Sydney, but I was there.  So here is some information about Sydney and also my list of the top 5 things to do in Sydney, Australia.

Sydney, the sparkling jewel of Australia’s east coast, is a city that blends stunning natural beauty with a vibrant urban lifestyle.  Known for its beautiful and historic harbor, laid-back atmosphere, and friendly locals, Sydney is often the first stop for travelers exploring the Land Down Under.  With a population of over five million, it’s the largest city in Australia and a melting pot of cultures, reflecting Indigenous heritage, British colonial history, and a good representation of global immigration.  Sydney-siders are known for their relaxed outlook on life, love of the outdoors, and deep appreciation for good coffee and coastal living.

Whether you’re here for a few days or a few weeks, here are the top five things you simply can’t miss in Sydney:

1. Sydney Opera House & Circular Quay

Start your journey at the Sydney Opera House, the city’s most recognized landmark.  This architectural masterpiece sits on Bennelong Point and offers guided tours as well as world-class performances in music, dance, and theater.  Just outside is Circular Quay, a bustling harbor where ferries, buskers, cafes, and culture converge.  Grab a flat white (espresso drink) and enjoy people-watching with views of the Sydney “Harbour” Bridge in the background.

2. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

For thrill-seekers and photographers alike, the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is a must-do.  Strap into a safety harness and climb to the summit for breathtaking panoramic views of the city and beyond.  It’s an unforgettable experience that offers a unique perspective of the skyline, harbor, and historic landmarks.

3. Bondi Beach & the Coastal Walk

Sydney’s beach culture is legendary, and Bondi Beach is the crown jewel.  With golden sands, rolling waves, and a buzzing café scene, it’s perfect for sunbathing, surfing, or grabbing an acai bowl.  For a scenic adventure, take the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.  This is a stunning cliffside trail that winds past rock pools, secret coves, and more pristine beaches.

4. Explore The Rocks & Sydney’s History

Step back in time in The Rocks, the historic heart of Sydney.  This cobblestone-lined district tells the story of Australia’s colonial roots, once home to convicts and now filled with lively pubs, markets, and art galleries.  Take a walking tour to learn about the area’s fascinating past and hidden laneways (Alley).  You might just get lucky and find the entrance to a fantastic steakhouse like I did in some of these hidden laneways.

5. Visit Taronga Zoo with a View

Set on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour, Taronga Zoo offers a unique chance to meet native Australian animals like kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. You will also have the opportunity to see other “exotic” species from around the globe.  The bonus?  All of it comes with one of the best views of the city skyline.  You can even arrive by ferry from Circular Quay for a fun and scenic ride.

By all accounts, Sydney is a city of ancient and modern, coastal and urban cultures, yet relaxed and full of energy.  The warmth of its people, the beauty of its landscapes, and the richness of its culture make it one of the most exciting destinations in the world.  If you go between September and March, pack your sunscreen, hat, and plenty of water.  No matter when you go, pack your camera, and remember to always take along your sense of adventure.
