Top Five Things to Do in Ensenada, Mexico

If you’re looking for both culture and adventure, Ensenada, Mexico is the place for you. It is a very vibrant port city on the Pacific Coast of Baja California, about 70 miles south of San Diego, California. Travelers have referred to Ensenada as a “gem” because of its diverse, breathtaking natural beauty and rich culture. A person can find almost anything in Ensenada. From outdoor adventures to popular dining, this is a place where everyone can find satisfaction.

Here is my list of the top 5 things to do in Ensenada.

One: Snorkeling at Islas de Todos Santos.
This is what I enjoyed the most. The water is cold by fair weather traveler standards, but fairly clear and full of aquatic wildlife. For me, this is a must-do. We took an hour-long boat ride from the docks in Ensenada’s main harbor past the sunbathing seals and cormorants drying their wings to the larger of the two islands about 10 miles offshore. Once there, we donned wetsuits (remember the water is fairly cold. About 60 degrees) Once in the water in a protected cove, we swam a route following our guide. She led us through areas where we were able to see underwater arches,

The tour company provided all the necessary equipment for those who did not come prepared. Near the end of our snorkel tour, we moved closer to the aquaculture farm (fish pens) on the east side of the south island and were able to see and even interact a little, with the curious sea lions.

On a scale of difficulty, I found this experience easy. If there was any downside to it, it was the water temperature. However, once you got used to it, it was not bad. Nobody was ready to get back in the boat at the end of the experience.

Two: Other things to do in Ensenada include making a visit to the “La Bufadora.” (Literally, The Puffer)
La Bufadoa is one of the world’s largest natural marine geysers. This blowhole sprays water almost 100 feet into the air. It does this when the ocean forces water into a semi-submerged cave and on it ebbing, the water and air become pressurized with only one way to vent. Up. It is magnificent to watch and it is much more regular than Old Faithful. When the sun is right, beautiful rainbows form in the mist above this part of Mexico’s rugged coastline. Close by La Bufadora are markets and local vendors selling everything from food to trinkets and souvenirs.

Three: Wine country tours
For those of you who enjoy wine and wine tasting, Ensenada is the place for you. Nestled in the heart of Mexico’s wine country is Valle de Guadalupe. It’s just a short drive from Ensenada, but well worth the trip. The valley is home to more than 100 wineries and many boutiques. In this beautiful valley, a person can take winery tours, sample local wines, or just feast on some of the local cuisine. Whatever you do here, you are guaranteed a memorable experience.

Four: Stoll along the Malecón
In Latin America, a malecón is a stone embankment or esplanade that runs along a waterfront. Ensenada’s is highlighted by a scenic boardwalk through some of the most vibrant areas of the city. While taking a leisurely walk, it is possible to watch the fishing boats come and go and also there is a chance a large cruise ship will be entering or leaving port. Along the malecón it is possible to find restaurants and cafes along with shops. Occasionally, street performers are present to entertain the tourists and locals. This is a perfect spot for a quiet and relaxing stroll in the evening.

Last on my list of 5 is the food in this region of Baja.
From a distance, one would not think Ensenada is a culinary paradise. Some say Ensenada or rather Baja is the home of the fish taco and they would be right. For hundreds of years, fish tacos have been a treat for the local inhabitants and it was not until the early 1980’s before they were brought north to the United States. Other popular dishes include ceviche, shrimp cocktails, and grilled lobster. Foodies from all over the world are drawn here for this tasty experience. You can find everything from upscale restaurants to street food vendors in Ensenada. Whatever you desire can generally be found and it is all excellent. Because of its proximity to Valle de Guadalupe, most of the restaurants offer craft beers and local wines.
